HSS.2.6 The student will explain the interdependence of producers and consumers in a market economy by describing factors that have influenced consumer demand; and

• describing how producers have used natural resources, human resources, and capital resources to produce goods and services in the past and the present.

Gem and mineral mining was an important part of the local economy; students can experience firsthand the process of gem mining and gold panning. They can also learn about the timber industry, both by exploring the national forest and by touring our original period saw mill. Come experience what it was like for people producing these valuable goods in the past.

Science

SCI.2.2 The student will investigate and understand that natural and artificial magnets have certain characteristics and attract specific types of metals. Key concepts include

• magnetism, iron, magnetic/nonmagnetic, opposites, poles, attract/repel; and
• important applications including the magnetic compass.

Students can study naturally occurring magnetism in mineral specimens in our shop and museum.

SCI.2.7 The student will investigate and understand that weather and seasonal changes affect plants, animals, and their surroundings. Key concepts include

• effects on growth and behavior of living things (migration, estivation, hibernation, camouflage, adaptation, dormancy); and
• weathering and erosion of the land surface.

Observe the effects of weathering on mineral specimens, the formation of mineral deposits, and the land face as a whole.
