| Dear Educator, I am writing to inform you of a unique field trip
opportunity for your classes only a short drive away located in
Wytheville, VA. Virginia City
not only fulfills SOL requirements for your grade level, it also boasts
Time Traveler certification, both before 1607 and after, and is
certified as three museums by the VA Department of Museums: our boomtown, our grist mill, and our gem and

Virginia City is an 1880’s style frontier town located on the beautiful Big Walker
Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway in Southwest Virginia. Step back
in time to when frontier expansion was driven by the search for gold
and silver. Boomtowns, like ours, sprung up to trade with the
prospectors. Our gem mine has a covered sluice that allows you and your
students to prospect for a wide variety of gemstones from around the
world. Our developing museum has a growing collection of incredible
gems, minerals, and fossils on display. While here, you can tour the
town and see our authentic grist mill and saw mill, go for nature
walks, and have a picnic overlooking the Jefferson National Forest.
